Inspired by an image he saw on a Jacques Cousteau television programme, this drawing centres the concept that people are more than their bodies – their thoughts and their histories make them bigger than themselves. Billy believes “that’s the way to be if you’re going to be happy, you have to be big.”

The fish embodies this concept with its small body and vibrant multicoloured tail. Billy says, "the tail seems to be the story, and the wee fish is doing the hard work, dragging it around saying ‘wheeeee!’.”

Part of his Born on a Rainy Day - Early Drawings collection, Billy rediscovered this work while sorting through a cupboard in his house in Gozo, Malta. Full of colour and life, this drawing sparks childlike wonder in anyone who sees it.
